AC- a battle of the sexes
LIFE / 16 MAY 2024
In the perpetual battle of the sexes, few topics spark as much controversy as the air conditioning debate in an office setting. Yup, indeed you read that right - the thermostat wars are no joke, and 99.9% of the time - it becomes a battleground, a constant tug of war with each adjustment provoking a retaliation.
It’s no secret that men and women have different temperature preferences. Whether we blame it on biology or evolution, the fact remains: women feel colder than men at the same temperature. Some studies claim it's down to body composition and metabolism, regardless….It’s mere science and often results in temperature turmoil and the delicate dance between cold and cosy.
Its a tale as old as time - women are the unsung heroes, armed with thermals and layers upon layers of jumpers and scarves (efficient as blankets FYI). Behold the ultimate secret weapon…the desk heater, a beacon of warmth to help us fend off the hyperthermia. (If you don't have this yet, quite frankly - it is a must). It is a genuine struggle to stay warm in a workplace that is seemingly stuck in an eternal ice age.
At first glance, many assume that women's higher core body temperature would result in generally feeling warmer than men. However, there are numerous studies which highlight the opposite effect for women. “If your body is used to being warm, chilly air can feel even colder in contrast".
Our advice? Shotgun the seat next to the thermostat. The stakes are high - those who manage to secure said seat, hold the power in dictating the comfort levels of the entire office eco-system. In the meantime, brave the elements one cardigan at a time.
