 Uncommon partners with paper-sculptor
Pauline Loctin for Holborn installations

NEWS / 26 JUNE 2024

This September, as part of London Design Week 2024, Uncommon Holborn will unveil "Flying in Nuanced Colours" – an enchanting and immersive large-scale series of installations by the celebrated paper-sculptor Pauline Loctin. Known for her captivating artistry that brings paper to life, Pauline’s bespoke commission for Uncommon will seamlessly blend the elegance of origami with the vibrancy of contemporary art, reflecting the innovative spirit of the B Corp certified workspace provider.

There’s no doubt Uncommon needed an artist to create something as bold and captivating as their atrium. Partnering with multidisciplinary art consultancy, Artistic Statements, the flex operator quickly found their natural fit: “When I received the brief from Uncommon and saw the space in which the work was to be housed in, Pauline immediately came to mind as an artist whose meaningful work connects people to places through art”, Zoe Allen, Founder of Artistic Statements stated.

Pauline’s inspiring installation begins outside Uncommon Holborn where a stunning undulating structure graces the building's glass-fronted façade. Designed to be appreciated from all angles, this installation offers a visual feast for both passersby and members within the space. Inside, a magnificent installation measuring 2x6x5 metres ‘floats’ gracefully within the atrium (evoking the flutter of birds), drawing the eye upwards and across the light-filled, double-height space. Surrounded by 6ft trees and lush foliage, this piece is a testament to Uncommon’s commitment to biophilic design, creating environments that promote well-being and productivity.

Of course, Uncommon has made remarkable strides in their ESG agenda over the past 18 months, achieving PAS 2060 carbon neutrality, reducing operational emissions, and securing B Corp status. The flex operator’s commitment to sustainability is integral to their design ethos. “Our dedication to environmental sustainability, combined with exceptional service, smart technology, and thoughtful design, makes Uncommon Holborn a destination for those seeking innovative and inspiring workspaces”, Chris Davies, CEO of Uncommon, remarks.

Pauline’s choice of Chartreuse and Hot Pink – two of the world’s most beloved colours – fittingly infuses the space with a vibrant energy, beautifully complementing the atrium’s verdant backdrop. “At its core, the installation is a celebration of the freedom to create and express. My choice of vibrant colours is a bold declaration of intent to infuse colour and joy into the everyday”, the renowned artist expressed. Working exclusively with GF Smith paper, the project further hopes to champion the rich tapestry of creativity found within the city.

Viewers will not only be mesmerised by the visual splendour of "Flying in Nuanced Colours" but will also have the opportunity to engage with the art through masterclasses led by Pauline herself. These sessions will allow participants to learn the techniques behind the creations and craft their own miniatures. Uncommon members will even participate in the final stages of the installation, contributing to this collective artistic endeavour.

'Flying in Nuanced Colours' will be open to the public from 14th September 2024 at Uncommon Holborn, launching as part of London Design Festival 2024.
